Are LVL beams termite resistant?
Daniel Moore
Published Jan 18, 2026
SmartFrame Laminated Veneer Lumber (LVL) products are made exclusively for Tillings and supplied with built-in protection from termites using a Glue Line Additive (GLA) treatment from Zelam Limited, a Lonza company.
What are the disadvantages of LVL?
Although its dimensional stability is better than solid wood, the product may result in some defect, such as warping, if it is not properly stored in the warehouse. Also, LVL requires high capital investment to have relatively low production cost.
Can LVL timber be used outside?
Laminated veneered lumber provides uniform widths and strength, as well as the elimination of shrinkage and twisting typically found in traditionally milled, forest-grown wood lumber. With LVL now being offered with pressure treatment, it is approved for outdoor decks.
Can laminated beams be used outside?
Yes, as long as your load and span requirements are in line, treated Glulams can be used for most exterior applications. The most common applications are going to be for decks, large pergolas, awnings, and covered porches.
Is an LVL beam waterproof?
How is LVL made? LVL is made from rotary-peeled veneers that are bonded together under heat and pressure into large panels that are cut into range of widths. Phenol-formaldehyde resins provide waterproof bonds.
21 related questions foundCan LVL get wet during construction?
Wetting during construction may lead to temporary elevated moisture content and dimensional changes. Once covered, the I-joists or LVL will ultimately dry and re-equilibrate to the ambient humidity conditions, but some expansion or swelling may remain after redrying.
Does LVL timber rot?
Laminated Veneer Lumber (LVL)
Because of the strength of the glue, engineered lumber is more stable and resistant to common problems like rot, termite infestation and mould.
Can I drill holes in LVL beams?
Whenever possible, avoid drilling vertical holes through LVL beams unless the beam width is at least 3-1/2 inches. Prior to drilling any vertical holes, an engineer or architect qualified in wood design should be consulted.
Is there an exterior grade LVL?
Exterior LVL.
By treating the veneers prior to lamination, Pacific Woodtech is able to offer engineered beams for exterior use, opening up options for decks and other outdoor framing. Deck builders wanted it. Some major manufacturers said it couldn't be done. But here it is: a pressure-treated LVL.
Can you paint LVL beams?
NelsonPine LVL billets in standard thicknesses come with an industrial type finish that can have normal timber paint and stain systems satisfactorily applied to them.
How far can you span a 14 LVL?
As per general thumb rule and guidelines, a double 14″ lvl beam can allow span upto 23 feet far distance used for residential building or projects.
Is LVL stronger than wood?
Laminated veneer lumber (LVL) studs can be two times stronger in compression and tension than standard framing lumber of the same dimension.
Can LVL be exposed?
Further to this they state that the LVL/LGL surface CANNOT be exposed horizontally to weather & that water entrapments are NOT permitted. Therefore, unpainted or unprotected LVL/LGL Beams, are unsuitable for weather exposed projects.
Is glulam the same as LVL?
A glulam beam looks like a stack of 2 x 4s (or larger lumber) glued together on their broadsides. This is in contrast to other engineered members, such as LVL (laminated veneer lumber) and Microlam beams, which look like very thick plywood, with very thin layers of wood glued together to form a thicker mass.
What type of wood is LVL?
Laminated veneer lumber, abbreviated to LVL, is a type of structural composite lumber (SCL) commonly used in wood construction for both residential and commercial buildings. Similar in concept to plywood, LVLs consist of many thin (less than a quarter inch) wood veneers adhered with high strength adhesives.
What are the main uses of LVL?
LVL was developed in the 1970s and is today used for permanent structural applications including beams, lintels, purlins, truss chords and formwork.
Are all LVLs pressure treated?
Microllam® LVL and TimberStrand® LSL is appropriate for dry-use applications only (generally not directly exposed to precipitation) and cannot be pressure treated. Neither product is suitable for the pressure treatment process due to material density and adhesive content.
Can I joists be used outside?
Yes, you can use I-joists and LVLs to build a deck, as long as you carefully waterproof the framing. A couple of years ago, a landscaper asked us to work a deck into the landscape design for one of his clients.
Can you screw into the bottom of an LVL?
Drilling holes in IB (International Beams) LVL (laminated veneer lumber) is generally discouraged. However, small diameter round holes, appropriately located in the wide face of the LVL, are permitted as indicated in the table and notes below.
Can you cut a hole in a load bearing beam?
Structural Beams / Load Bearing Support Beams:
This is a structural support beam which is load-bearing. Do not drill through these! These are sometimes different colors, and can be termed as LVL (Laminated veneer lumber), or Engineered Support Beam.
Can LVL beam be notched?
Notching of LVL beams should be avoided whenever possible, especially on the tension side of a member. Tension-side notching of LVL beams is not recommended except at end bearings, and then only under specific conditions.
How long does LVL wood last?
Floor and roof trusses and laminated strand lumber are durable household components, and engineered trim may last 30 years. They must be installed properly!
Do LVL beams shrink?
That, combined with the fact that LVLs are made from thin strips of lumber to promote stability, means that there will be very little change in the height or the length of the beam after it's installed.
What are LVLs made of?
Laminated veneer lumber (LVL) is an engineered wood product that uses multiple layers of thin wood assembled with adhesives. It is typically used for headers, beams, rimboard, and edge-forming material.
How should LVL be handled?
How to handle and store your Wesbeam Laminated Veneer Lumber products.
...
General
- Should be stored well clear of the ground on level bearers spaced at maximum 1800mm centres.
- Should be covered to keep dry but still allowing for ventilation.
- Avoid placing LVL over areas susceptible to ponding.
