Can you overfill an outboard lower unit?
To answer, yes you can. I have seen guys that will pump it till the oil comes out the top which is correct, but will then put the top screw in & then give a few more pumps for "good measure". This usually causes overfilling as well as a slight pressurizing if they get that bottom screw in real fast.
Why is there oil leaking out of my lower unit?
It also could be that your new gear case has a blown seal , especially if it was overfilled . The seal below the water pump can get sucked in when it cools if there is too much lube in it because of not enough airspace for expansion ... It would be a good idea to check your gear case lube for water intrusion.
What do you do if your lower unit oil is cloudy?
That milky color and consistency is most likely due to water intrusion. It will not break down from use and get lighter, like other oils as it breaks down and gets used it darkens. Time to change seals and when you do your water pump do the whole kit and not just the impeller.
What causes water in lower unit of outboard motor?
You have seals on both sides of your water pump. You can have a warped lower unit which will allow water to seep in; even with new seals. You can have a touch or roughness on a seal seat that doesn't let a seal seal. Take the lower unit to a "good" dealer and have them go through your lower unit.
