"Full spectrum" lights which look like incandescent light bulbs are incandescent light bulbs and so are good only for producing heat. They do not produce any UVB. Tungsten filament technology cannot produce UVB.
Do regular light bulbs give off UVB?
Incandescent light bulbs, the most commonly used light bulbs in homes, give off small amounts of UV light. The UV light emitted by these bulbs is so small that it's impossible for human health to be affected in any noticeable way.
How do I know if my light bulb is UVB?
A white sock or a piece of paper would suffice. Watch the item. If it turns a violet shade, the UV light bulb is functioning. If it remains primarily white, the UV light bulb might be defective.
What kind of bulbs produce UVB?
Halogen and Mercury Vapor UVB Bulbs
Halogen and Mercury Vapor Bulbs generally emit higher levels of UVB than florescent bulbs, and broadcast it over greater distances.
Does white light contain UVB?
In reality, the final amount of emitted UV is so small as to statistically say that White Light LEDs do not emit any UV light. So, is there enough UV light emitted to pose a health risk? No, the amount of UV light emitted by White LEDs is well less than a single percentage point.

Do LED Light Bulbs Emit UV Radiation? For the majority of LED light bulbs, in industrial applications and otherwise, they do not give off UV radiation. In earlier incarnations of LED lighting the reason they did not emit UV radiation was their inability to give off white light.
Does LED light have UVB?
Even though there are statements that LEDs do not produce UV radiation, this is not absolutely true. Standard LEDs create a minimal amount of UV rays, which is far less than the amount produced by natural daylight. The only LEDs that do emit a considerable amount of UV light are brilliant blues.
Do all fluorescent lights have UVB?
Do CFLs emit UV? All fluorescent lamps emit some UV. Typical fluorescent lamps, including CFLs, which consumers would encounter, emit very low levels of UV. In order to measure any UV radiation from these lamps, very sensitive measuring equipment must be used.
Do fluorescent lights have UVB rays?
Inside the bulb, electrical discharge excites a gas (usually neon or mercury vapour in argon), which emits ultraviolet radiation. But the ultraviolet radiation is not visible to human eyes and must be converted into visible light.
What's the difference UVA and UVB?
Two types of UV light are proven to contribute to the risk for skin cancer: Ultraviolet A (UVA) has a longer wavelength, and is associated with skin aging. Ultraviolet B (UVB) has a shorter wavelength and is associated with skin burning.
Can a regular light bulb be used as a basking light?
Any incandescent bulb can be used for daytime heating...even the bulbs you use in your own lamp fixtures. The wattage you need will depend on what it takes to do the job. The higher wattage bulbs throw out more heat and so can be used a little farther away from the animal than lower wattage bulbs.
Do plants need UVA or UVB?
Plants respond to exposure to both UVA and UVB light; different plants respond in different ways, but in general studies have shown increased production of antioxidants / flavonoids and other natural sunscreen compounds in a process called photomorphogenesis.
Do LED lights have UVA and UVB?
Some in the lighting business have stated that LEDs do not produce UV radiation. However studies have shown that standard LEDs do create a small amount of UV. That said, the amount of UV they actually emit is even less. This is due to the phosphors within an LED lamp that convert the Ultraviolet light to white light.
Do black lights produce UV rays?
Black lights emit a type of ultraviolet radiation called UVA, which is invisible to the human eye. They are often used in industry, nightclubs or amusement parks to make things glow. This glow is the energy emitted by the light being converted into visible light by particles called phosphors.
Do halogen lights give off UV rays?
Halogen light bulbs emit some amount of UV radiation, and some sources consider them dangerous.
Do LED nail lights have UV rays?
Some nail lamps are called “UV” lamps, and some are called LED lamps, but both emit UV radiation. They predominantly produce UVA rays, which have been linked to both premature skin aging and skin cancer.
Can you use a UVB light to grow plants?
UV light can speed up the germination process for starting seeds when grown indoors. As growers transplant seedlings to more intense light sources, UV strengthens the plants, better preparing them for high intensity light.
Can I use a UV light for my plants?
Ultraviolet light is extremely important for plant growth. In safe doses, ultraviolet light helps plants and crops produce essential plant oils which not only enhance the flavour and smell of fruit but also helps the plants protect themselves from excessive ultraviolet exposure; acting as their own natural sunblock.
Do grow lights emit UV rays?
LED grow lights emit UV rays (UVA and UVB) that can cause cancers in the case of prolonged exposure and no safety measures. It is important to understand how much time is suitable to spend under these lights, and you need to take all safety measures, including clothing.
Do all reptiles need UVB?
All reptiles and amphibians, however, benefit from UVB and it should be provided. There are lower output UVB bulbs available. Make sure that UVB bulbs are used during the day and turned off during the night to mimic daytime and nighttime.
Is UVB the same as blue light?
Although less well-known than UV light, blue light is another type of light that we have exposure to on a daily basis that can potentially cause damage to our eyes. Part of the visible light spectrum, this type of visible light is the closest to UV light on the light spectrum.
What's the difference between a basking light and a heat light?
The difference in heat is that the ZooMed bulb will create a hotter, smaller basking area, and the ExoTerra bulb, while still creating a hot basking area, will result in a broader basking area that is not as hot as the basking spot created by the ZooMed bulb.
Can you use regular bulbs for reptiles?
While house light bulbs can be used for heating reptiles, they are designed for producing light, not heat, so you may require a higher wattage bulb to heat your enclosure/basking spot to the same temperatures.
Can I use a regular bulb for my bearded dragon?
Normal regular household light bulbs may be used for bearded dragons. Household bulbs typically have a yellow tinge to them. Lights with a white or closer to sunlight glow are better. Many of the basking bulbs are incandescent and as such add to the heating of the environment.
