Technically, nothing is permanent :) I know a quality retr0bright treatment will last many years when the computer is stored in a friendly (low heat and UV) environment.

How long does Retrobright last?

When exposed to UV-light, the bromide comes to the surface of the ABS plastic, and the yellowing begins. Unfortunately, even after treating the item with Retr0bright, the yellowing returns after 3-4 years, looking worse than your grandfather's underwear.

Can you reuse Retrobright?

You can likely reuse the same hydrogen peroxide/distilled water liquid mixture in the future but you will have to replenish the losses.

How long does it take to Retrobrite?

The process can take anywhere from 6-8 hours depending on the amount of heat and sunlight available. Flip the parts around every 1-2 hours so all sides can get the sunlight they need for the gel to do its job.

Does Retrobrite weaken plastic?

But I hear the Retrobrite process can weaken the plastics of each console case and make them very brittle, which is a bad thing. So, the way I see it, there are three options: Do nothing. This is the easiest option.

Why do old consoles turn yellow?

This yellowing happens thanks to a flame retardant called bromine in those old ABS plastics. When exposed to UV light, those bromine molecules can destabilize and leech through to the surface, causing the plastic to turn yellow (or even brown if left long enough).

How does UV light Remove yellowing?

For yellowing, there is a technique called retr0brite that has proven successful, and essentially involves using MORE UV light to break apart the bromine-oxygen bonds. Hydrogen peroxide is then used to get in there and fill the broken bonds with hydrogen, making the bromine more stable and reversing the yellowing.

Can you restore yellowed white plastic?

Using Peroxide to Clean Yellowed Plastic

Pour straight peroxide in a container. Put the plastic in the container. Allow the plastic to soak in the sunlight until the stain lifts. Rinse and dry.

Do you need UV light for Retrobrite?

Retrobright is a process you go through to take the “yellowing” out of old computer or video game plastic. What you do is smear some peroxide developer on the yellowed plastic, cover it with food plastic wrap, and let it sit under UV light for several hours.

Does hydrogen peroxide weaken plastic?

H2O2 is a strong oxidizer. I wouldn't even dare try it on anything metal. On plastic, it would perfectly be fine as long as it's not the industrial 35% grade.

Does peroxide whiten plastic?

Coat the yellowed plastic in hydrogen peroxide using this simple process: put the plastic in a plastic bag with enough hydrogen peroxide to cover it entirely (ability to submerge depends on the size of the object), and leave it in direct sunlight for three to four hours.

How long can you reuse hydrogen peroxide?

In a sealed container, hydrogen peroxide lasts approximately 3 years. However, as soon as you open the container, it starts to break down. You might be surprised to learn that it's only effective for 1 to 6 months once the container is opened.

How do you remove yellowing from white plastic?

Hydrogen peroxide works well on plastics that have turned entirely yellow instead of in just one spot. Fill a plastic bag with enough hydrogen peroxide to cover the plastic. Stick the plastic in the bag of hydrogen peroxide and lay it out in direct sunlight. Wait 3-4 hours before rinsing it off with clean water.

Why does white plastic yellow over time?

White plastic turns yellow over time due to a chemical reaction that occurs when it is exposed to light, oils, etc. There are a couple of different ways to get rid of this discoloration, ranging from easy to more difficult. Look through the methods to find one that works best on your particular project.

How do you whiten yellowed plastic on a fridge?

Spray vinegar onto yellow plastic bins and sprinkle baking soda over the vinegar. Spray the area again until the bubbling ceases. Allow this mixture to sit on the yellowed plastic for an hour or overnight before wiping clean.

Does UV light fade plastic?

Exposure to UV light starts a process called photodegradation, which takes place alongside thermal oxidation (from exposure to heat). These processes break down the structure of the plastic. Once this process starts, it feeds on itself and starts a continual cycle of degradation.

Does hydrogen peroxide work better with UV light?

Whitening process. The reverse process uses commonly available 6% or 12% hydrogen peroxide and UV light as catalyst (can be common UVA bulb or even simple sunlight) to activate the whitening reaction. Ultraviolet light bombarding hydrogen peroxide generate very active hydroxyl and restore the original color.

Does the sun discolour plastic?

Although sunlight normally discolors plastic, it can reverse damage as long as your item is coated in hydrogen peroxide cream. A table or a stone surface is a great place to stick your item.

Does NES yellow?

The Super NES, as well as our other systems, are made with a plastic containing flame-retardant chemicals to meet safety guidelines. Over time, the plastic will age and discolor both because of these chemicals as well as from the normal heat generated from the product or exposure to light.

How do I stop my console from yellowing?

Another preventative method involves keeping the SNES away from as much natural and artificial light as possible, since those pesky UV rays are what cause the yellowing in the first place. Keeping the system in a cool place is another tip, as is keeping it sealed in a lead-lined bag.

Is soaking your feet in peroxide good?

Soaking smelly feet

Luckily, they are no match for hydrogen peroxide. Prepare a foot soak with one part hydrogen peroxide to three parts warm water and let your aching feet relax. The same treatment will help protect against spreading athlete's foot fungus and even soften calluses and corns.

What happens if I soak my feet in peroxide?

Hydrogen peroxide can effectively kill the fungus on the surface level of the foot, as well as any surface bacteria that could cause an infection. Pour hydrogen peroxide directly onto the affected area. Note that it may sting, and it should bubble, especially if you have open wounds.

Can I put straight hydrogen peroxide in my ear?

Hydrogen peroxide is a popular ingredient in ear drops used to treat ear infections and earwax removal (cerumen). It is safe when used carefully as directed by your healthcare provider.
