Do I need to plait my horse when I compete in affiliated classes? There are no rules to say you must plait your horse, but most people do.
Should I plait my horse for dressage?
For the rest of us however, plaits are a must, whether you're taking part in in-hand showing, or ridden showing. And although it isn't mandatory to plait your horse for show jumping, dressage or eventing, it is usually the done thing!
How many plaits do you need for dressage?
There are no set rules regarding the number of plaits but it's generally considered correct to have an odd number of plaits on the neck, not including the forelock. 9, 11 or 13 plaits are most commonly seen, depending on the horse's size and conformation.
What should a horse wear for dressage?
Traditionally breeches or jodhpurs are worn for dressage. They must be plain white, beige, or cream in colour to complement your show jacket. No branding is permitted on breeches at any level.
Do you have to wear white saddle pad for dressage?

How do you braid a thick horse's mane?
Pull the thick areas of the mane, usually the middle section, until the mane density is more even from poll to withers. Shorten the mane to four- to five-inches long* after the mane clears the crest. Pull the mane a little at a time over a couple of weeks until the mane is a manageable thickness to braid.
What side do you plait a horse's mane?
Plaits should always be on the right side of the horse, so if the mane is not yet on this side, use a comb and mane and tail detangler spray to brush it over. Once this is done, comb through the mane with a little water and separate into an odd number of sections, from 9-13.

Boots. At any level, you can choose to wear dressage or field boots. Riders most commonly choose to show in black tall boots and most commonly select dressage boots rather than field boots.
Why do we plait horses?
Braiding a horse's mane or tail is a practice that dates back centuries. As horses became the primary mode of transportation, braiding or plaiting their mane was a way to prevent it from getting excessively tangled up and/or getting ensnared in items like a soldier's musket.
How long should a mane be for plaiting?
Ensure that the mane is pulled to an adequate length and thickness before plaiting (10-12 cm is ideal).
Where would you plait the horse and why?
To produce a running plait, start with a section of hair near the ears as when making an ordinary plait. Plait down, but each time you pass the left-hand section over the centre one, take in a small piece of mane. Let the mane fall naturally rather than pulling it tight and, as you progress, the plait will curve round.
Can you braid a horse's tail?
Plaiting (or braiding) a horse's tail makes the thick, un-pulled hair on the tail look tidy and attractive. For competitions, a good plait provides extra elegance and professionalism to complete your horse's look. A good tail plait can take a lot of practice to do well, but is not difficult.

Can you carry a whip in dressage?
No whip of any kind may be carried whilst competing in the dressage test. One whip only, no longer than 120cm including lash, may be carried when riding on the flat at any other time.
Do dressage saddles have to be black?
No rule about saddle color for eventing. Traditionally black tack is for dressage, and brown or black tack for the jumping phases. Saddle color really doesn't matter in any of the phases though. The black tack in the dressage phase is probably due to 99% (not a real statistic) of dressage saddles being black.
