FLAMELESS RATION HEATERS (FRH)
What are FRH made of?
The FRHs are made from powdered food grade iron, magnesium, and sodium. Each FRH is individually packaged in a sturdy, leak- proof polybag which serves as the heating container for the MRE.
How does a FRH work?
It is essentially a customizable outer bag with a heater pad inside it. The heater pad mesh contains magnesium alloy that when activated, either with water or saline, starts a chemical exothermic reaction that produces heat.
Are FRH toxic?
Both types of food heaters are non-toxic and safe to use. Spent food heaters can be easily disposed of as household trash. The use of the military FRH MRE heater has raised questions in the past, and for a period of time, its disposal had certain requirements attached to it.
How hot does a FRH get?
A flameless ration heater (FRH) is a form of self-heating food packaging included in U.S. military Meal, Ready-to-Eat (MRE) rations or similar rations, capable of raising the temperature of an 8-ounce (230 g) entrée (main course) by 100 °F (38 °C) in twelve minutes, which has no visible flame.

Abbreviation for follitropin-releasing hormone.
Can MRE heaters explode?
By crushing up some MRE heaters, putting it in a bottle, adding water, and putting the cap on, the escaping gasses will expand to the point where it will cause the bottle to explode with a loud but harmless noise.
Are MRE heaters hazardous waste?
"Used" MRE heaters, which have been activated to heat a meal, are not considered as a hazardous waste by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Once the heater is reacted with water at the end of the heating cycle, all that remains are inert substances with no adverse impact on human health or the environment.
Can an MRE heater start a fire?
The simple answer is - no. Safely igniting a fire relies on controlled combustion. Improvising ignition out of a device like this is not going to create the sort of controlled combustion I associate with safety.
Do MRE heaters expire?
Everything has an expiration date and MRE heaters are not any different. MRE heaters usually last about 5 years in intact packs if kept in 75°F or below. After the shelf life exceeds, the heater won't function properly.
What is inside MRE?
Military MRE Full Meals include an entree, side dish, crackers, dessert, candy, and a beverage mix like coffee, as well as the flameless ration heater (FRH), pouch of water, and utensils. Military MREs also include items such as chewing gum, toilet paper, and matches.
How do MREs last so long?
MRE kits are stored in airtight packaging, so bacteria can't creep in and contaminate the food before it's been opened. It's similar to the principle between sticking food in the freezer to preserve it: when the food is frozen, the growth of bacteria is slowed, and food is therefore edible for longer periods of time.
How do MREs get hot?
Because of the importance of a hot meal, all military MREs come packaged with a flameless heater. The flameless heater uses a simple chemical reaction to provide sufficient heat to warm the food. A Marine demonstrates a flameless heater. Chemical heating is actually a pretty widespread natural phenomenon.
What is the chemical reaction in MRE heaters?
Ration heaters generate heat in an electron-transfer process called an oxidation-reduction reaction. Water oxidizes magnesium metal, according to the following chemical reaction: Mg + 2H2O → Mg(OH)2 + H2 + heat. This reaction is analogous to iron being rusted by oxygen, and proceeds at about the same slow rate.
Can you eat MRE cold?
MRE's are great because you can eat them absolutely any way you want. MREs are pre-cooked meals making them safe to eat straight from the package—warm or cold.
Can you heat up MREs in the microwave?
Using a Microwave to Heat MREs (CAUTION!)
Cut open MRE pouch and place contents in a clean microwave-safe bowl or plate. (Do not place the MRE retort pouch in a microwave!) Cover with paper towel. Microwave on high for a couple of minutes (2–3 minutes).
How do MREs work?
MREs were first developed for the United States Military. The MREs come with a flameless heater to maintain the warmth of the meal in the middle of the battlefield. The flameless heater operates due to a simple chemical reaction in order to offer enough heat to warm the food on the battlefield.
Can you reuse MRE heater?
Organizations which utilize MRE's must establish procedures to ensure that unused heaters…are not disposed of in the regular trash [but] are collected by supervisory personnel. Collecting and storing unused MRE heaters [with] the… intent…not to… reuse…is a violation of Federal law.” US Dept.
How do you dispose of food heating packs?
MRE heaters that have not been properly activated must be disposed of as hazardous waste. Disposing of an un-activated MRE heater in a solid waste container is against the law. Un-activated MRE heaters pose a potential fire hazard if they become wet when turned in at a landfill site.
How hot does an MRE heater get?
The heater is a simple combination of powdered food grade iron and magnesium, salt, and water. When water is poured onto the included heater pad, the heater releases enough heat to warm-up the pre-cooked meal to 100+ degrees Fahrenheit in approximately 12 minutes.
Are MREs healthy?
"We found that the MRE does not increase gut leakiness, does not appear to negatively impact gut health, and has only subtle effects on the gut microbiome in people eating the MRE while going about their normal daily lives."
Do MREs need water?
An MRE will provide good taste and proper nutrition while maintaining a safe, long shelf life. Each MRE replicates the calorie count of a complete meal. There is no need to add water to an MRE. Simply open the pouch and enjoy!
Do you need hot water for MRE?
All you need is the heater bag, your MRE, and an ounce or two of water. Some ration packs come with a sachet of water specifically for this purpose. Because the water you use to heat the MRE doesn't come into contact with the food, it doesn't need to be potable.
Are there preservatives in MRE?
Several elements comprise this technology, including controlling water activity and temperature: because contrary to popular belief, no preservatives, additives, or chemicals are ever used to produce MREs.
