When should you throw an Understable disc?
Emily Ross
Published Jan 12, 2026
Probably the most popular use for understable discs is helping newer or slower armed players get as far down the fairway as possible, regardless if that is from the tee, or the fairway itself. Not everyone starting out is going to have the arm speed to handle 10+ speed rated discs, especially overstable discs.
When would you use an Understable disc?
Understable discs can be utilized for long panning anhyzer shots that drift from left-to-right the entire flight path. They are great for hyzer flip shots, where you throw the disc on a hyzer release angle. When done right, it will flip up to flat and fly really far before fading softly at the end.
Why should beginners throw Understable discs?
* Understable discs are the most beginner friendly. * They turn in the same direction of their spin during the initial stages of their flight when thrown flat, straight and with average power.
Do you need Understable discs?
Understable discs go farther than overstable discs of a similar speed, so an understable mid can encroach on some fairway drivers, and have zero fade.
Should I throw forehand with a stable or an Understable disc?
Overstable vs.
Forehand shots are usually more about control than pure distance, and most of us find it easier to achieve more consistent results with the stable-to-overstable plastic. Throwing slower-speed discs and understable discs forehand is more challenging.
26 related questions foundShould I throw forehand or backhand?
Most players would agree that using a backhand is the best throw for distance. While there are players that are able to throw a forehand further than a backhand, most players are throwing a backhand further most of the time.
Do Understable discs fly further?
Understable discs go farther than overstable discs of a similar speed, so an understable mid can encroach on some fairway drivers, and have zero fade.
Why do pros throw Overstable discs?
When thrown on a hyzer, an overstable disc wants to find the ground. The more stability a disc has, the quicker it will want to dump out of the air and land. This means that the less stability the disc has, the longer it will take to find the ground when thrown on a hyzer.
What makes a disc Understable?
If you have a disc made so that more air passes over it than under it so that the nose is exposed to more downward force, the right edge will go down. This turns the disc right and makes it understable.
What is a Hyzer Flip?
A Hyzer Flip is very similar to an S-Shot but follows a straighter line. An understable disc is thrown very fast with a hyzer angle of release. The disc turns or “flips” up and brings its nose down in the process. This allows for a long straight glide.
Can you make a disc more stable?
The only other thing you can do to a disc really that may impact the flight for additional stability would be to add or remove dome on a disc. Some molds respond better to this than others and there are many threads on here covering the topic. Generally more dome = more "overstable" or more low speed fade really.
How do I know if my disc is Understable?
UNDERSTABLE – An understable disc has a High Speed Turn number that is greater than its Fade number. For example, a disc with flight numbers 13/5/-3/1 would be considered understable.
What is the difference between Overstable and Understable discs?
Understable means a flight that turns right ( RHBH throw). Stable is a flight that doesn't turn. Overstable refers to a flight that turns left ( RHBH throw).
How do I know if my disc is Overstable or stable?
Discs that have a small amount of turn and a larger amount of fade are generally considered Stable-Overstable. They will turn slightly and then fade back past the center line that you were aiming on.
How does an Understable disc fly?
An understable disc flies with the opposite characteristics than an overstable disc. It has a tendency to turn to the right while the disc is at its highest speed. How much it turns depends on the third number in the four-number flight rating system. Typically, understable discs have a turn rating of -2, -3, or -4.
What does an Overstable disc do?
Typically used by strong arm high speed throwers. The more overstable a disc, the greater the tendency to turn opposite the direction of the spin. The more overstable a disc, the greater wind it can handle. The higher the speed of release, the less sharp the turn.
What is the most Understable disc?
The Mamba is one of the most understable disc golf discs ever made and sports a ridiculous -5 turn rating (turn ranges from 1 to -5, with -5 being the most turn). The Mamba is the best disc on the market for roller shots.
Do Understable or Overstable discs go further?
For a newb that doesn't have much power and a new overstable disc it will go hard left and early. So yea, understable discs make more sense. But as time goes on and you develope better technique and more power and the disc gets beat in you will need more overstable discs.
Is the Sidewinder an Understable disc?
Turn: -3.0. Fade: 1.0. Primary Use: Control Driver. Stability: Understable.
How far should you throw a midrange?
The typical distance to pull out a midrange is anywhere inside of 300 feet/91.5 meters. Because of their ability to glide and shape shots, midranges are great for both shorter tee shots and longer upshots.
Should I throw lighter discs?
On the most basic level, lighter discs take less effort to throw than heavy discs and as a result are often more accurate. However, light weight discs are also generally affected by wind more than heavy discs so you may find heavier discs can maintain a consistent path more effectively in windy weather.
Are lighter discs more Understable?
They are technically the same stability, but with lighter weight, the faster you can throw it and the more rotation you can put on it, making it behave more understable.
When throwing a forehand or backhand the power comes from the?
1.)
Power comes from the momentum of your core, shoulder and arm, while your wrist controls the spin and direction of the flight path. The speed will impact the power of the throw, while the spin helps stabilize the disc and help flying through the wind.
What type of disc should I throw forehand?
There are usually two main characteristics that typically mark a disc as a good “forehand disc” — shape and stability. Many players find that flat-topped discs with very little dome are easier to grip and throw forehand.
